This summer, history takes the stage in a brand-new way. The Sointula History Plays: Part 1 is the first-ever theatrical production to be performed inside the Sointula Museum itself—an unforgettable experience that brings the island’s past to life in the very place where its artifacts and stories are preserved.

Written and directed by Tammy Hampel, this original play shares the extraordinary founding of Sointula—a Finnish utopian colony on remote Malcolm Island. The story follows the community’s bold beginnings in 1901 through to the dissolution of its socialist agreement in 1905.

Told through first-hand accounts and devised theatre, the play brings to life the colourful characters, ideals, hardships, and moments of tragedy that shaped the dream of Sointula: a place of harmony, equality, and hope.

Performed by a talented local cast, this production not only showcases the spirit and resilience of the Finnish founders but also supports summer employment for island performers. Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, this is a rare chance to experience Sointula’s remarkable history told in an intimate, immersive setting.

Come and be part of this unique celebration of courage, community, and the enduring pursuit of a better world.
