The Media Centre
sointula on screen
This space features a seating area where visitors can watch a selection of twelve self-guided videos, each showcasing different aspects of the community’s history, culture, and traditions. With video lengths ranging from a few minutes to 25 minutes, guests can take in Sointula’s stories at their own pace.
Explore Creating a Gillnet, a look at the craftsmanship behind this Sointulian town invention or enjoy Community Music, which highlights the role of music in bringing people together. An Interview with Carmen Burrows shares memories of Sointula Winterfestival aka Winterfest, a cherished annual market going into its 47th year in 2025. Other films focus on local archiving projects, Finnish songs, dance performances, and the people who have shaped the community.

Saturday Movie Nights
In the 1950s and 1960s, the F.O. Hall hosted Saturday night movie screenings. Films arrived by Union Steamship and were wheeled up the hill to the hall, a story shared with Gloria Williams. This and other memories can be found in the Book Nook exhibition, along with interviews from the community. A micro-exhibition beside the Media Centre features original film posters and quotes about these cherished movie nights.
Storytime
We also have uploaded our most recent documentary Sointula: History & Memories to our YouTube Channel. This is a 40 minute film featuring our community elders reminiscing and sharing their life experiences growing up in Sointula. This community effort received an award from Heritage BC and was shortlisted for the Governor General Award for Excellence in Community Programming.
