Press Release via Sisu Theatre Society as follows: The remarkable story of the creation and legacy of a Finnish colony on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia. The Sointula History Plays explores the unique founding of the community and brings to life the colourful characters that sought to build utopia. A combination of first-hand accounts and devised theatre tell the tale of courage and steadfast determination through moments of unbearable tragedy and the pursuit of the dream of Sointula a place of harmony.
Sisu Theatre, in association with the Sointula Museum, will present two short plays. Part 1 will focus on the founding of the community from 1901 up until the split of the colony and the dissolution of the socialist agreement in 1905. Part 2 will highlight those families that stayed and built the community that still thrives today. The combined plays will explore the first 50 years of Sointula.
This project will provide part-time summer employment for local performers, and will enhance the offerings to tourists to Malcolm Island, showcasing the incredible spirit of the Finnish founders. Auditions will take place in March. Watch Sisu Theatre Society’s website for more information soon. Contact Tammy at sisutheatre@gmail.com
