We Work Together for the Benefit of All

The Story of Malcolm Island’s Socialist Collective, 1901–1905, A Translation of Matti Halminen’s Sointula. Hardcover book, Published 2021. 280 pages.

In 1900, a small group of Finnish immigrants employed as coal miners on Vancouver Island had a dream: a different kind of life for themselves and their families, and a model for other working people. The dream did not last, but the story has survived. Matti Halminen’s account of what he and his comrades tried to achieve more than a century ago is a tale of human courage, determination and, ultimately, endurance.
