Tracey Buker – August Artist Spotlight

FLORA, is about the Island’s unique plant life: its diversity, beauty and uses. On view for the month of august the exhibition showcases work from M. Tree, Betty Carlson, Jan Rosgen, Tracey Buker, Chris Hurst, Sandy Wiggins, Kathleen Blohm, Yolana Mortensen, and Sheila Roote. Throughout the month we’ll be chatting with each artist participating in our latest summer exhibition.

Below is our first a rapid fire Q&A with Tracey!

What prompted you to start creating art?

I began crafting when I was in my teens with sewing, crocheting and embroidery. I love photography as well. It wasn’t until I moved to Sointula last year that I realized what I traditionally thought of as ‘crafts can also be perceived as art.

What were the inspirations for your art piece?
The ocean view from my new home and my love of flowers! I started gardening about six years ago. Growing cut-flowers from seed, harvesting and arranging them into bouquets to give to family and friends, along with drying and pressing them became a passion.

Can you tell us about the materials you worked with?
The driftwood boats and masts were gathered on the beaches of Malcolm Island. The cyanotype process for the sails requires natural fibres; this fabric is 100% cotton. Cyanotyping was invented in 1842. The technique involves using two chemicals to coat the paper or fabric then letting it dry. Working in a dimly lit room you lay down your objects (here I used pressed flora) onto the coated surface. After exposing it to UV light and rinsing it thoroughly the vibrant Prussian blue print appears.

What’s your favourite style of work?
I haven’t found a favourite yet but photography and cyanotyping are my current ones!

What would you say to an aspiring artist?
I might suggest you look at your ‘hobby’ or ‘craft’ as an artistic creation! I never thought of myself as an artist but it feels amazing to join talented people bringing joy and beauty to the community.

Thanks Tracy!
