FLORA, is about the Island’s unique plant life: its diversity, beauty and uses. On view for the month of august the exhibition showcases work from M. Tree, Betty Carlson, Jan Rosgen, Tracey Buker, Chris Hurst, Sandy Wiggins, Kathleen Blohm, Yolana Mortensen, and Sheila Roote. Throughout the month we’ll be chatting with each artist participating in our latest summer exhibition.

Below are a few words from Betty about her submission:

What inspired your piece for this month:

I love creating texture and will pound metal, twist paper into odd shapes and try to push the limits of whatever element I am using. Though flowers are not my usual motif I have explored them before with paper, ink and buttons. The two Fleurs are made with painted mylar and a heat gun trying to emulate the shiny delicate shapes of petals. Plastic, of course, is toxic when heated so my explorations happened outside with a respirator and it was an interesting process trying to capture the right moment of petal formation and not get burnt while doing it. Making art remains a challenging, not always successful, and often humourous event. It continues to give me surprising results.

Thanks Betty!
